Final Blog
Over the time of this course I went through many different feelings. Why am I doing this? Why do I care? How will this benefit me? I felt this way throughout most of the semester until one specific week. I had a really bad anxiety attack one day, and I had never experienced that before, therefore I was terrified, and wanted to do everything I could to not let that happen again. I then was doing our assignment over module 6 where we actually talked about depression and anxiety. This is what hooked me into this class... better late than never, right?
Over the time of this class, I learned a lot of different things, starting in module 1. Module 1 was all about you, and who you are, and then we branched into what field of Psychology YOU are interested in. This really opened my eyes because I didn't know there was more than one field of psychology! I got to read all about sports psychologists and how much they are used in the professional league. How you can be a psychologist in a school, which is called a councilor, you can be a researcher, work in nursing homes, and even Marketing and Advertising. I think what was coolest for me was at Rehab centers. I believe that if I ever got a degree in Psych, I would want to work with Athletes who are recovering from a major injury. I believe that with my past experience and with how I have a major injury but still play sports would be a really good advantage and testimony to have in that field.
Next, we talked about Brain and Behavior. I thought this was a very interesting week of reading because I believe that the brain is such an interesting thing, and there is SOOOO MUCH to learn and discuss about the brain. I think it is so cool that every single feeling, thought, and movement goes through the brain that fast! I learned through this that as a newborn baby, we have more brain cells than we will ever have in our life. I found that to be so interesting because we know nothing as a baby, however the more we learn, we have less brain cells! I also found it super interesting that all of our behavior comes from different places in the brain. This was really effective for me to learn since I am wanting to work in special education. Its cool to know what causes what in the body! In this weeks assignment, I really enjoyed Rachel's blog how she talked about how she wants to work with animals and the difference between human and animal brains!
M3 was about Developmental psychology, which is basically Personality and Life span development. This was a really fun assignment to do, because I got to talk to my roommate, Taylor's parents about Taylor's personality and then she got to take a personality test! I really liked this assignment because it really shows the individuality in people and how not much changes in people from how they view themselves versus people close to them! I thought that it was really cool to talk about life span and development psychology and personality at the same time because It was cool to see how the human body changes and your personality reflects that. One thing that stood out to me was a question that was asked in the reading that said "If you could choose to be and stay a particular age, what age would you be? I chose 18, Its being on the verge of freedom, but still not having so many responcibilities.
The next thing we learned about was in week 7 & 8 and it was learning and memory. I really enjoyed this lesson for many different reasons. One thing that stood out to me was how in the reading it talked about things like addiction. One thing said "why do gamblers have so much trouble quitting even when they continue to lose money?" This really stood out to me because addictions are something very serious and something that people can't shake. I really enjoyed learning about learning in this unit ;)
Week 9 was spring break!!!! that was a good mental break!!!
The next Module was over Motivation and Emotions. M5 task was over "multiculturalism" and I talked about my friend Regine. I talked about how although she lives a normal life, it is different. I talked about how Regine has been a dear friend to me my whole life and how she has helped shape me into the person I am today. This lesson really hit home because it brought back all the good times i had with my friends throughout my life and how blessed I am to have them in my life still. We also talked about emotions and motivation in these weeks and I really liked reading about how the brain effects many different emotions and motivation because I've always been told i am an emotional person.
The nextt few weeks we did Phycological disorders. I really liked this because I got to talk about people I am close with and I really got to reflect on myself. I have struggled with anxiety for awhile now, and my first panic attack was right when we started this lesson so the video we watched in this really helped with how to help that. I believe that this was all Gods timing. I also talked about my softball coach and another girl on my softball team during this task. I talked about how both of them struggle with depression and how that has effected them in their life and how they are now because of it. Over all, this was my favorite week of the course including week 14 and 15.
Week 14 & 15 was about positive psychology. I took my time to focus on the "Awe Walk" with this assignment. I did this walk and reflected on the week. Reflected on my life, and everything I had and am blessed with, no phone, just me and nature. I believe that this helped me find my "inner self" and my purpose. I was so much happier after this week. Even after reading other peoples posts, I was just overwhelmed with Joy on how this week effected them and some decisions they made because of this week. I remember from the video discussing how important it is finding your happiness.
Over all, this class helped me tremendously. I will be able to bring these things into my everyday life and I learned many different lessons throughout the class. I really loved having the freedom of my own blog in the class, It made it feel more like a hobby than a class. I believe that I will take the stuff that I learned from this class with me and run with it!!
